Sage-ing® Leadership Training

The Sage-ing Guild offers two programs of Basic Leadership Training for persons interested in being certified to work professionally with our Sage-ing® materials. In addition, there is an occasional Advanced/Beyond the Basics program.

Basic Leadership Training:

  • Certified Sage-ing Leader training is a one-year Internship program for persons who wish to gain an in-depth knowledge of Sage-ing. This knowledge can enrich personal lives and practices as well as be a basis for programs, such as lectures, workshops of various lengths and study groups.
    • Prerequisite requirements:
      • Attend an Intensive workshop. Sage-ing Circle Facilitator training qualifies as an Intensive workshop.
      • Read From Aging to Sage-ing by Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Ron Miller.
      • Read and complete exercises in The Sage-ing Workbook (given to each Intensive participant).
      • Complete an application and interview.
      • Acceptance into the program by the Education Committee.
    • An initial Training weekend led by two experienced Faculty members.
    • Year-long Internship under the guidance of an experienced Mentor.
    • A required minimum of 15 hours of leading Sage-ing sessions within the Intern's community.
      • Feedback by a Mentor
    • A final Celebration/Certification weekend led by two experienced Faculty members.
    • Total cost other than transportation, lodging and some food is $1800 and includes:
      • Beginning and ending weekends' tuition.
      • Sage-ing Curriculum Resource Guide and all materials.
      • A personal Mentor to help develop Sage-ing sessions and improve facilitating skills.
      • Several conference calls between and with the current class and their faculty.
      • Oversight by the Training Coordinator.
      • Scholarships are available.
    • Intensive Workshops:

      Apr 30-May 2, 2010
      "Aging, a Work of Art: Invitation to a Sage-ing® Workshop": a Sage-ing Intensive weekend
      Walker Conference Center
      Newton MA
      Pat Hoertdoerfer and Julia Riley (941-776-8024). Cost: $250. Scholarships available.
      September, 2010
      "Sage-ing Intensive weekend"
      Seattle WA Pat Lewis (206-322-9211) and Carol Scott-Kassner. Cost: $250. Scholarships available.

  • Sage-ing Circle Facilitator training is designed to help the student understand Sage-ing principles and utilize a prescribed set of materials for teaching elders. Sage-ing Circles have been modeled after Native American Elder Circles—a gathering place for adults of the tribe to listen, reflect and bring life experience to issues at hand.
    • Three-day (one long weekend) training program at Memorial Hospital, Leighton Center, South Bend Indiana
      • This training is held once a year.
    • Tuition is $500, with all materials, including an extensive Sage-ing Circle Curriculum Guide.
    • Sage-ing® Circle Facilitator training (qualifies as a Certified Sage-ing Leader prerequisite Intensive)
Completion of either Basic Training program qualifies one to become a Professional Sage-ing Leader member of the Guild.

Beyond the Basics & Advanced programs:

The Sage-ing Guild occasionally sponsors workshops, retreats and conferences which contain in-depth material suitable for Professional Sage-ing Leaders and others.
